Overhaul of Greece in the works

So the promise of consistent multiboard positions for nations may not be viable for the amount of time and research I'd have to spend overhauling the JASS to comply, but I think for now consistent faction coloration is achievable while keeping that working with all the other systems. But ultimately that would be sacrificed too if I spend too much time hitting my head on the wall, for now though it's not an issue. Current extreme meme dream ideas that I would put in after the overhaul was done would be the inclusion of a few very hard factions that could be selected: Sea People faction. You'd randomly spawn somewhere in the ocean with a Flagship with your hero inside (or a special Flagship, or your hero is literally the Flagship) and play on from there down any starting cities. Possible advantage could be navy that is cheaper in gold, lumber, or supply. Barbarian Chief faction. You'd spawn with control of a random city, and instead of a Refugee Encampment you would make a Barbarian Encampment. Possible advantage would be having both the Hoplite (or the old Levy Phalanx unit) and Heavy Infantry unit available to you from the start. Refugee faction. You'd spawn with a King in exile in some random location and have to work your way up with only starting resources. Possible advantage would be that your special units would be of the first Polis you capture. The randomness would be pseudo-random as I would have to predefine possible cities/regions but for game purposes it'd be random enough. I think one base advantage to those factions would not be having your location revealed at the start, a feature I may add given that starting factions would be inconsistent. Disadvantages are the lack of or reduced base income, the lack of a defensible Polis, and the random nature of your spawn location. The meme factions would not be something that could be auto-randomed by AFKers at the start.

Cyprus is a little far, but maybe the time of the Iapygians is nigh.

Overhaul of Greece in the works

Right now I am working on an overhaul for Greece. This involves the ability to pick your nation at the start of the game (not the lobby). For now the nations will remain the same color and stay in the same position on the multiboard, so if you pick Sparta, your name and units will be red and you will be at the top of the multiboard regardless of what color you were in the lobby. This is done so that the player experience is consistent in two ways: if you see red units, you can expect Spartan Hoplites to possibly be in the mix, and because it maintains continuity with the present aesthetic of Greece. Being able to identify enemy nations at a glance is also important because I will be adding additional nations to the map (with the final nations still to be determined as I haven't started work on that part yet). I've currently gotten past a few big hurdles already in setting up these systems and integrating them together, but many more difficult hurdles remain. After that work there will remain a huge amount of detail work to set up the triggers to execute properly for each player alongside the extensive quality assurance efforts to go with it (bugs will likely make it into the released product regardless). Updates to Greece can still be made in the meanwhile if merited, but they would be small things like balance changes or bug fixes rather than adding in new things or changing how a system works. If you have any thoughts and suggestions let me know, such as for new nations and what their special units would be. I've already got a few fanciful ideas I might implement near the end of this overhaul or save for future versions if I'm burnt out on QA.

  6. Besides the crashes I had on Friday night before the patch, I've been having a great time. How about you guys? If you love custom games you should really try to play this weekend. Only thing I miss is being able to see what lobbies exist through an online website, but I suppose the lack of it encourages people to launch WC3 and get into chat rooms and see what friends are online, so it could be a positive thing in the long run.

The revo was downgraded for a reason as it used to cause lulzy outcomes, it wasn't arbitrary, so if you want it back I would like specific ideas as to the form. Green had to either commit hard to trenching it all, or he just had this Arabian wave wash over him. Or when it was in a smaller area, it became easy to contain. Without giving howitzers or an actual base with producing infrastructure there's not too many ways to go about realizing the Arab Revolution. I'll see about how to conceptaulize that West front change. Currently my terrain editor is a bit bunk because the height restrictions were lost when I had to revert back to the editor and the classic solution didn't work. If I edit the height for mountains then a single click ruins the entire range, it also means I can't raise mountains to their typical heights in ISH. When I became aware of it being a problem I didn't want to invest the time into solving it while I was busy with other priorities for the map. If you've addressed this Krackles, let me know what you did or just send me over the file you replaced in your WC3 folder.

    ISH Suggestions Moving Forward

I don't understand how you can disagree that it's not an issue with how the game is designed and is only a skill divide. That sort of issue has been present for years as we've all gotten better at the game. How could a rework of how that all fight works to what I described not have much of an impact? This criticism is starting to lose its validity to me because it seems to be being tossed around regardless of context. Designing a 2v2 in the West front, or making the purple/grey fight less linear by designing the Balkans to keep Grey/Purple interested in fighting there consistently beyond May 1915, is not a series of linear 1v1s. The Hung/Serbia dynamic would not be linear either, and with the new Romania, yellow's late game base of power is backed up against an ally who can help, Russia, instead of dangling alone in Greece. It's tough to even call West front a 2v1 right now. Blue and teal rarely fight together barring 1918 pushes with mass tanks/inf/howies on Munich, they push separately and WG goes to bully them in a 1v1 for a bit before retreating to bully the other front and then the winner is determined by how ably WG can handle that push and pull until an ally can reinforce him to take over a 1v1. East front is pretty much designed to work without pink's involvement, because he can't be trusted to show up anyways. The fact that he's meme-tier means you have to design all the possible fronts to work without Bulgaria's involvement because I can't plan for what Bulgaria's actions will be, even in 1914. This game is he helping green? Is he attacking red? Is he going full navy against purple? Is he focusing on evaporating yellow the moment he enters the war? You can still have some excitement and flavor without a slot like this. People still want balance. Look at how much I've had to nerf pink repeatedly in past changelogs to make people happy. Loss of howitzers, loss of bonus gold, buffs to purple's navy, so on and so forth. I feel like we're at the point where it's appropriate to cut our losses and remove the slot and use the space to try to fix West Front, because balance changes are already effectively removing Bulgaria as a slot. --- So per your suggestions: me and Trench disagree on the idea of removing Torpedo Boats, because apparently some people mean remove it as a unit. If this is what you mean, how would you design navy to not be a Dreadnought slugfest? Without the ability damage of torpedos (or a counter system like Greece which I wouldn't want to emulate for a few reasons), navy would become "Throw my Dreads at their Dreads and see who wins." without some compensating change. If that's not what you mean, then tonight's version did remove them from the Mediterranean in the starting forces. Right now I like the fact that of the 5 warships, each has their niche use. I am receptive to the idea of a 7v7, but if I'm doing a big change, I would like to try to fix the West front first before moving to that 7v7... which would create a 1v1 in the east (which I'm not opposed to, it's just the suggestion in the same post is funny to me). Ideally I would plan it so you can start the game in a normal 6v6 mode if you leave those two slots empty, much like how if you start the game right now without Green/Orange. That way the 7v7 could degrade to a 6v6 or a 5v5 and you could leave either Egypt/Syria or Turkey/Caucasus empty or both. The issue with this though is that people feel obligated to fill the game up. Even with 10 players, people completely forget the 5v5 mode exists and they'd rather wait it out to try to get 2 more players. That would likely be the same situation for a 7v7, which will lead to a higher proportion of games dying because a FH couldn't be obtained.

They have a hard enough time as it is in the game as it is currently structured.

I can change it to 600 and we can see if people are happy with that sort of sight radius, where both LoS is reduced but not enough to the point of changing howie warfare.

Uhhh what else were people expecting and what would they want me to do? The sight radius being much higher would still allow for wide ranging vision of movements on borders.

Meme Idea for Purple starting situation

Making things less of a straight 1v1 will not be embraced by a community that wants less of a 1v1 situation?

Meme Idea for Purple starting situation

Yes, that would be thought about. It has been, repeatedly I'm not, you all are deciding that through the meta, I don't like navy being this important and I just described how I would make it less relevant.
