I've never played D&D nor any similar tabletop RPG though I often play board games with friends. We decided to try D&D since it looked like it could be fun, and so I bought the Starter Set. I decided to DM since I knew the most about the game despite never playing it. We ran the Lost Mine of Phandelver module which comes with the Starter Set but I made certain changes to make it more interesting. I tried to predict as many possible outcomes as I could but of course it was all pointless, it took my players 2 minutes to try something I hadn't thought of. We ended up playing for nearly 6 hours and we agreed to meet up in 2 weeks for the second session, looks like we found a new hobby.

Map of the Sword Coast I printed out for our session, also you can see the DM screen I made to hide my notes behind:

Clay token for our rogue, I made one for each class but only have the pic of this one (it's supposed to be two curved daggers):

    I love it.

And yeah, as a DM be prepared for players to fixate on/break completely things you didn't account for, flexibility in a DM is a huge boon, hell I'd even say its a necessity.

You never know, they might like it, can't hurt to ask.

Yeah I read as much on various forums and on reddit, but I foolishly expected them to follow the obvious choices since they were all new. I think I invented a bunch of new rules during the game, but luckily 5e is pretty damn good when it comes to that since a lot is left open for intepretation. My biggest worry was that the girls might not be as interested in the game (we were 3 couples so with me as a DM we had 3 female and 2 male players) since they're not into gaming or anything even remotely similar to RPGs, but in the end they seemed more interested than the guys. Overall it was an awesome experience and I'm already looking into ways of making it even better. I was thinking the next step would be miniatures but that shit is too expensive, maybe I'll just get more dice.

As you learn more as a DM, you'll get better at improv. I suggest honestly a couple classes, being able to follow whatever hilarity your players can do makes for better stories.

Just have to be as awesome as I am (basically you're screwed).

Doubt I'll be able to find one in this third world country, at least there's a ton of videos on youtube though.

A couple friends and I have been really interested in trying D&D, but none of us has any experience, making everyone hesitant to try to jump into the role of DM. Is it fine having (or being) a DM who's never played before so long as you read into it enough before hand, or should one play with experienced players before taking a stab at it with fellow newbs? Any thoughts/comments on getting started on D&D in general?

Bane might have a different feeling on this, but it's better for a player to become a DM with some accumulated experience, but ultimately it's just a game, just understand that you will make some mistakes, but if you do enough reading/use the resources and advice in the books and online you'll still run something that'll be good fun.

Basically the most important thing for a DM is to make sure that everyone's getting a chance to play and feels involved. Nobody likes being the player whose character did nothing that session.

It's hard to get a hang of the game with no one in the group having played before, but it's not impossible.

That's exactly the situation we were in, I'd say you'll be more than fine depending on the time you put into it. It'll be easier if you get a module like the one in the Starter Set since you won't have to make chars and the campaign yourself. Also since you're all new you'll all be in the same boat and that way you'll understand if someone makes a mistake (I actually forgot to play as 4/5 goblins in one combat encounter but they reminded me and we just restarted it). Basically I really recommend the Starter Set sine it's pretty cheap and really helps ease you into it.

D&D is not some video game you have to nail perfectly to get to the next level/mission/whatever, it's a game you play with friends for fun. You're all on the same side so if you're all fine with messing up a rule or two as you go along it's going to be fine. At least that's how we approached the whole thing and we can't wait for the next session.

Here are some resources that will help you get into it, but they are most certainly not required based on how my first time went:

I agree with both Fergus and Rhemar, yes under optimal conditions you'd want a DM thats had at least some prior experience and is more familiar with the rules than the players. But if you're all new to it then why the fuck not? You'll just have to do a bit more reading prior to the sessions than the players will.

Also 5th edition has been the easiest D&D system to learn to date, theres no skill point formula for first level, and the skills themselves have been pruned again, theres minimal to no stacking of your +1 or +2 bonuses, just advantage/disadvantage, all damage resistance is just half or none, and the thing I liked most about PF they added to the game as well, every level your character gets something, like you feel like you're getting stronger as you progress, especially for the first 5 levels.
