The upcoming European elections are to be extraordinarily interesting. I'll have a keen eye on the results. Austria, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and Germany; these are turbulent times.

It may be a bit early but the result isnt likely to change. (Hofer will probably get a bit closer to Van der Bellen but wont win.)

Alexander Van der Bellen will become the next president of austria.

Interesting, today we have to vote a referendum to modify our constitution, those are times of changes indeed.

What's the modification?

You'll have some violent months ahead of you, you'd better find a way to contain yourself.

How dare you categorise a group of parties. I'll punch you in your face!

Now that you mention it. That does sound like the same thing to do.

Its not that, its that its a meaningless term parroted by media and used as a label on any party that disagrees with the mainstream EU politics in Brussels. You don't like mass migration? Bigot! Far-right! Populist! Nazi!

You can call it meaningless and dislike the way the media stigmatises the term, but it remains one of the most precise terms to be used for this big and diverse movement in Europe. Most of the parties are populist parties and they ought to be described right winged if not just for their stances on social issues.

I'm not a big fan of the polarising nature of today's discourse for all the reasons you are mentioning. Yet should we censor our use of political definitions because of that?

No it doesn't. Best term would probably be Eurosceptic.

Are you actually serious here? Have you seen the economic plans of National Front, Danish Peoples Party or FPÖ in Austria? They are pretty much centre-left or in case of National Front just straight up socialist platforms. I'm sorry Thurr but your statements show that you are very ill informed on this issue and unfortunately you too just parrot mainstream media labels.

But the far right has always been about what could be described as socialist economic plans (insofar as they demand far more control of the marketplace and income redistribution)! Their right wingness is determined by their stance on social issues, and their choice of label and central issues is on social lines!

The fascists, the old conservatives, they were all always about economic control. That's why liberal is still seen as the opposition to conservative despite the semi untruth of both labels.

Arguably. Populist gets you far enough in the same direction and broadens the definition to include other topics shared among these parties.

Yet on the political spectrum parties that have differing stances from traditional social or economic stances are poorly represented; a choice is made and general social policies > economic policies. Reality being that such parties end up on the right-side of the spectrum. Therefore it is inevitable that the aggregate of all such parties get the right wing stamp, whether it is an unfair representation or not.

Surely you should be far more nuanced when you talk about these parties on a national level: they call the PVV right-winged just like all the parties you mentioned, but the only 'right-winged' stances they have are those on immigration and religion - everything else seems to come straight out of the Socialist Party election program.
